置く

put
一般的に置くという意味で使われます。無造作にポンっと置くニュアンスです。
・put a bag on the floor (バッグを床に置く)
・put a cup of coffee on the table (机にコーヒーを置く)

He put the ball on the ground.
（彼は地面にボールを置きました。）

place
慎重に物を置くという意味です。装飾品として花瓶や陶芸品などを置く場合や飾ると言うニュアンスです。

He placed the vase on the shelf in his room.
（彼は部屋の棚に花瓶を飾りました。）
