集める
collect
目的を持って同じ種類の物を選りわけながら集めるという意味です。
集める人をコレクターというように、stamps(切手)、picture postcard(絵葉書)、antique furniture(アンティーク家具)などを集める、収集するという意味にときもcollectを使います。
He used to collect magnets from all over the world.
※used to＋原型 （以前はよく〜していた）
（彼は世界中のマグネットを以前集めていました。）
gather
散らばっている物や人を一箇所にかき集める、寄せ集めるという意味です。
・gather all the leaves together (葉っぱをかき集める)
・gather children around someone (人)の周りに子どもたちを集める
They gathered all the evidence they could before the trial.
（彼らは裁判前に、集められる証拠は全て集めました。）
